Mjøstårnet The Tower of Lake Mjøsa / Voll Arkitekter

May 11, 2026

Mjøstårnet stands as one of the most ambitious timber structures ever realized — an 18-story vertical landmark rising from the edge of Lake Mjøsa in Norway. Designed by Voll Arkitekter and completed in 2019, the tower demonstrated that engineered wood could move beyond cabins and low-rise buildings into the realm of true high-rise architecture. Constructed primarily from glulam and cross-laminated timber, Mjøstårnet became an international symbol of mass timber innovation, sustainable construction, and modern Scandinavian design. Its warm structural language, exposed timber framework, and precise engineering transformed the building into more than a skyscraper — it became proof that renewable materials could compete structurally and aesthetically with steel and concrete at monumental scale.
